After a week of coaching, my favorite thing to do is escape to the outdoors.
Thankfully, South Florida has so much to offer in terms of parks, beaches, and trails.
Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing some of the best spots our region has to offer.
Here are my top 3 outdoor escapes:
- Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park (Whiskey Creek)
- Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
- Oleta River State Park
Whether you live in Davie, Hollywood, or Fort Lauderdale, these three spots are all accessible within 20-45 minutes of driving.
Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park (Whiskey Creek)

This is my go-to spot. It’s less than 20 minutes from my house and has amazing amenities.
Whether you are looking to kayak, paddle board, swim, or relax by the beach, it’s the perfect tucked-away spot.
For a casual adventure close to home, it is my favorite place.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

Located on Key Biscayne, Bill Baggs is one of the most scenic beach parks in Miami-Dade. If you live in the Davie area like I do, it’s a bit of a drive, but well worth it in my opinion.
The beach here is beautiful and rarely overcrowded, making it a great spot to relax in the sun or go for a swim.
The park also features the iconic Cape Florida Lighthouse, which you can tour for panoramic views of the coast.
Add in fishing spots, biking trails, and shaded picnic areas, and you’ve got the perfect full-day escape from the city hustle.

Oleta River State Park
Farther than Dr. Von, but not as far as Bill Baggs, Oleta River State Park is a great middle option.
Serving as Florida’s largest urban park, it offers everything from kayaking in the mangroves to mountain biking on wooded trails.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing day or active day, it won’t disappoint.
