The safety surrounding CrossFit for people over 40 years old was brought up at the Thanksgiving table this year, so naturally, I had to defend it.

First off, most of the members in our gym are around 40 years old +/- 5 years, so let’s just get that out of the way first.

We scale and modify the majority of our workouts for the everyday 30-40-year-old who wants to come in, sweat, get stronger, and leave the gym feeling good.

In this article, we will break down the safety of CrossFit compared to other recreational activities and how you can do it safely as someone over 40.

1. What the Research Says: CrossFit Injuries vs. Other Recreational Activities

One of the largest peer-reviewed evaluations of CrossFit injury rates was published on NIH.gov, which analyzed injury prevalence among people training at licensed CrossFit affiliates.

The findings were as follows:

CrossFit injury rates were 2.4–3.1 injuries per 1,000 training hours (Weisenthal et al., Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine). See the full article here.

This is similar to weightlifting and lower than many common recreational sports.

Here’s how CrossFit compares:

  • Running: Recreational runners average 7–10 injuries per 1,000 training hours—about 2–4x higher than CrossFit.
  • Tennis: Injury rates are reported around 4–6 injuries per 1,000 hours, typically involving shoulders, elbows, and ankles.
  • Pickleball: Pickleball has rapidly rising injury rates, largely due to the older demographic. A recent study shows 12,000+ ER visits per year from pickleball-related injuries (mostly falls and rapid movements).

CrossFit, when performed in a coached class at an affiliate, is less dangerous than many activities people do every day. Performed in a class setting, it is structured, supervised, and scalable for all levels.

Why CrossFit is Safe and Effective for People Over 40

The magic of CrossFit is its scalability. A 25-year-old athlete and a 90-year-old retiree can perform the same movement patterns:

  • Squat → standing up from a chair
  • Deadlift → picking up groceries
  • Press → lifting something overhead or getting off the floor

We call these functional movements – movements that you do in everyday life.

In CrossFit, we train functional movement patterns that will help you live a stronger and more independent life.

The 25 year old and 90 year old member of an affiliate differ by degree, not by kind. That means:

  • Same movement, different load
  • Same workout, different reps
  • Same intention, different speed or intensity

If you walk into a class with a 25 year old and a 90-year old, you may see the 25 year old back squatting 315 lbs, whereas the 90 year old will be squatting to a box with a PVC pipe.

CrossFit will help you build strength, mobility, bone density, stability, and cardiovascular fitness, all of which naturally decline after age 40 if not consistently trained.

CrossFit is the perfect training program for adults over 40 who want to get stronger, improve their cardiovascular fitness, and remain independent into their 90’s.

How to Do CrossFit Safely If You’re Over 40

CrossFit is safe when you scale intelligently and train with coaches who know what they are doing.

Some of the best ways to modify workouts:

  1. Substitute lower-impact cardio: Choose the bike instead of running if your joints prefer it.
  2. Modify pulling exercises: Swap pull-ups for ring rows or banded variations until you build appropriate strength.
  3. Reduce external load and volume: Lift weights that allow you to use proper range-of-motion. Additionally, reduce your reps as needed if you want a lower-intensity workout.

Most injuries aren’t caused by CrossFit the methodology. They are caused by:

  1. Poor coaching
  2. Inexperienced class management
  3. Oversized classes with no supervision
  4. Athletes letting ego drive intensity instead of good judgment

At Showdown Training Club, we minimize risk by offering:

  1. Expert coaching with years of hands-on experience
  2. Small class sizes designed for personalized attention
  3. Movement screening and onboarding to teach mechanics before intensity
  4. Over time, you will learn when to push, when and how to scale, and the importance of listening to your coach.

Conclusion

CrossFit can get you into the best shape of your life, even if you scale every workout.

Most of the people who join our gym are beginners, returning after a long break, or over 40 and ready to rebuild their fitness safely. Scaling and modification allow you to train the same movement patterns without unnecessary risk, while gradually building strength, confidence, and capacity.

When paired with expert coaching and realistic pacing, CrossFit becomes one of the safest, most effective training programs for people over 40.

If you’re over 40 and want to get stronger, healthier, and more capable, joining a CrossFit affiliate will change your life.
