Is CrossFit “Harder” Than The Gym?

Duh! Most people know CrossFit as a hard exercise program. The impression that people typically have of CrossFit is that it is tough, involves a lot of heavy lifting, and pushes you to your limits.

With the holidays and our gym closed for a few days, I’ve been going to a regular gym to get in some lifts.

I’ve been doing my typical CrossFit workouts in the regular gym, and I am definitely the odd man out.

In this blog post, we will dive into being part of a CrossFit Affiliate versus being part of a regular gym.

CrossFit versus “The Gym”

CrossFit refers to coached, group-based training with structured programming.

When you come to a CrossFit class, your coach will explain the workout to you and the class, and coach you through it by giving cues and feedback.

“The gym,” on the other hand, refers to a 24/7 gym with access to equipment.

At a gym like this, you hold yourself accountable to show up, plan, and execute your workouts.

In either gym, you can do a “hard” workout.

Why CrossFit Feels Hard For Most People

CrossFit often feels hard because of its intensity.

Additionally, a coach sets the pace, prescribes loads, and ensures movements meet specific standards, removing the option to subconsciously ease off.

Workouts are designed with clear time domains, rep schemes, and movement requirements that intentionally push physical limits.

Training alongside others increases accountability, making effort more consistent and harder to avoid.

Intensity is programmed and scaled to the individual, ensuring the workout is challenging but appropriate.

Which Will Produce Better Results?

A 24/7 gym is often easier in the moment because it offers flexibility, less pressure, and the freedom to choose what feels comfortable that day. Over time, however, it becomes harder because progress depends entirely on self-motivation, workout planning, and discipline.

When you are a part of a CrossFit Affiliate, there is no decision-making.

You show up to the gym to do your structured workout provided by the coach, and the results will come from the consistency in showing up, accountability held by the coach, and motivation of working out next to other people.

It may feel “hard” to show up to the gym day-to-day, but this path will yield exceptional results.

Coaches Take and Final Thoughts

With the holidays, I’ve been training in a regular gym occasionally, just once or twice a week for convenience. When I go, I typically lift near my top percentages and I finish my session with a typical “CrossFit” metcon.

I rarely see people out of breath or pushing their limits. Not to say that people in the regular gym aren’t working hard- but it’s an easy environment to be complacent.

It is always my preference to train in a CrossFit Affiliate.

Especially when there’s good coaching, challenging workouts, and you’re surroundedby friendly people.
