On Saturday, December 14th, CrossFit Showdown held its inaugural “Battle of the Fittest” in-house competition — an event designed to challenge our members’ VO2 max, strength, endurance, and grit.
Six teams of three — each made up of two males and one female — competed in three challenging events:
In this post, we’ll break down the highlights and take you through how it all went down.
I arrived at the gym at 6:30 AM — an hour and a half before the start of the first event.
With the help of Brittany Ruff, we organized the gym to accommodate each workout. We moved the bikes and rowers outside, arranged barbells and benches inside the gym, and greeted all of the competitors as they arrived.
We were thrilled to host Aries Physical Therapy, offering recovery services before the competition, and Relax and Get Results, who provided sports massages before, during, and after the event to keep everyone loose.
All 18 competitors showed up on time, so we kicked off our 1st workout brief at 8:00 AM. The workout kicked off just a few minutes later.
The 3,000m row took just over 12:00, leaving each team with a little under 3:00 to rack up as many calories as possible. In the end, the winning team, etched out the 2nd place team by just .4 calories!
For our second workout, we took the competitors through three max lifts.
They had 10:00 to find the heaviest 1-rep bench press, 1-rep deadlift, and 1-rep front squat.
This event had a more relaxed vibe compared to the intensity of the Relay Rampage. Competitors strategically worked up to their top weights at their own pace, using the final minutes to push for their 1-rep maxes.
Some hit new PRs, some matched previous PRs, and all around, everyone lifted the heaviest they could.
Brittany and I monitored the floor, offering cues and feedback to ensure safe and effective lifting. If a lift was missed, we provided tips on how to adjust and improve.
In event 2, the winning team lifted a combined 2,000 lbs! They earned themselves an event win and a huge boost in the rankings. The 2nd place team wasn’t too far behind, with a combined weight of 1,975lbs.
The competition wrapped up with a thrilling third workout that tested teamwork and grit. Teams tackled synchronized movements, including:
Between each movement, teams completed a 60-foot lunge.
There was a 2-way tie for first place and the other teams were not too far behind. It was anyone’s competition to win.
In the end, it came down to 4 devil’s presses.
The winning team completed 44 single-arm devils presses, whereas the second-place team completed 40 single arm devils presses.
The total margin of victory was only 1 point!
We crowned 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for our podium.
1st place
2nd place
3rd place
All of our competitors performed exceptionally and gave a maximal effort.
We can’t wait to do it again next year!
Special thanks to our partners for helping to make this event even more special:
